Hi Steve,

I am from Mangalore, India. I got my hair rebonding done 2 weeks ago in a reputed salon. While I love the look of my hair I am experiencing hair fall and it is making me paranoid. I am already using loreal liss shampoo, serum and masque given and recommended by the parlour. now I need your advice as to how i can avoid hair fall and maintain my hair without spending much....

Hi Radhika

Japanese Hair Straightening/TR - Rebonding as it is known in India.

Chemical applied to the scalp is the number one reason for hair loss after Japanese Hair Straightening/Rebonding. The other culprit the hair was ironed in the wrong direction. The hair has to be ironed at a 90 degree angle in 1/4inch (thickness) sections at all times. The ironing has to be in the direction of growth, which is usually a 90 degree angle + the proximity of heat from the ceramic iron can be too close for comfort, and mistakenly attack the hair follicle—permanently.

When people actually lose their hair it is my opinion that the follicle is damaged through excessive pulling and traction as well as the chemical depilatory action of softening the hair with Thio. Depilatories like Neet or Nair are based on Thio and these Thio containing TR products should never be applied to the scalp. We know that hair grows back after a depilatory so there must be other action on the follicle. I suspect it's a combination of the longer time on the hair, the traction and perhaps the heat increasing penetration. If the follicle is damaged topical products are not likely to help.

It seems to me the thioglycolate chemical agent touched the scalp for a very short period of time. You did not mention burn or scabs, so ultimately if you did not experience burn, tingling effect and tightness in the scalp, it should be fine and the hair loss will stop. If not, you need to discuss this with your family doctor who will refer you to see a Dermatologist.

DO NOT CONFUSE NORMAL SHEDDING WITH HAIR LOSS

A certain amount of hair is shed daily. This is nature’s method of making way for new hair. The average daily shedding is estimated at 50 to 80 hairs. Hair loss beyond this estimated average may indicate scalp or Rebonding trouble. However, don’t confuse this with people who shampoo their hair once a week or hardly brush their hair. If you haven’t shampooed or brushed your hair for a while, you’ll notice large amount of hair shedding. This is normal.

There are three phases of hair growth starting with the anagen “living or growing phase”. At least 85% of hair on a normal healthy scalp are said to be in the anagen phase at any given time and have a normal life of two to six years. The catagen “resting phase” is a transitional stage, the bulb’s cellular activity slows down as it approaches a complete resting phase. The final phase of the bulb’s life cycle is a complete resting stage called telogen “falling phase” these are the hairs that normally fall out and are often found in the brush or on the pillow. This shedding, “or old hair” is being loosened in the follicle to make way for new hair to grow. So the hairs that fall out are replaced rather quickly by long-lived new hair. The hair reaches the TELOGEN stage when the hair bulb has no attached root sheath. Eventually, this will lead to the hair to fall out, and signals the cell birth layers to begin cell reproduction to start the process all over.

In your previous post you have mentioned your hair feels too oily. This could be the result of the type of shampoo you’re currently using. L’Oreal Liss shampoo is not a good hair cleansing shampoo and as a result, it can contribute to oily scalp. Check and find out if Redken is available in India. The shampoo I recommend is called “Extreme” Shampoo.

What does the Hair Spa envolve? You’ve had Japanese Hair Straightening/Rebonding, you have spent the money to reduce the cost of salon maintenance. Depending on what it entails, generally, Hair Spa is a "menu service" with lots of bits and pieces of products that they can charge for. The result could be achieved by you at-home.

With regards to shampoo – check out Goldwell, Wella. Always seek the advice of a professional who has product knowledge. After Japanese/TR/Rebonding your hair needs a network of complex reinforcement formulas that can build strength and flexibility to give hair substance and resilience so it can bounce back. This empowers the chemically Rebonded hair’s inner structure and dramatically improve its outer appearance. Without an intensive at-home care reconditioning treatments, you cannot expect successful results.

If you are reckless with your hair then it is best to go to the salon.

The guidance you need is all there, on my website http://www.verticalsinhair.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=63&Itemid=64

I am not an expert with Wella products. As I said, speak to a stylist that has product knowledge.
