Chlorine and TR

TR and Chlorine/swimmers green hair: Although chlorine is thought to be the only cause of green hair, your hair turns green from the presence of hard metals (copper, iron, and manganese) in the pool water. The metals are oxidized by the chlorine and then bond to your hair, causing the greenish hue. Chlorine is bleach and it will cause hair pigment to lighten. Color-treated hair may fade, and darker hair may become less shiny.

TRd hair tends to absorb chlorine, becoming further damaged and over-processed. Chlorine affects hair more than salt water. Chlorine and hard water minerals can all cause serious damage to the hair not to mention leave it unmanageable, frizzy and for some; weighted and lifeless. If green hair is going to occur, it is most common on swimmers with light blonde hair, and light skin. For the light skinned blonde, though, the treatment is not so easy. You will need to locate and purchase the appropriate products.

What can I do to protect my hair from damage caused by swimming in chlorinated pools? First, make sure you wet your hair with fresh water before getting into the pool. This will help your hair to absorb the fresh water and won't be able to "hold" the chlorinated water. Run some conditioner through it, this will prevent chlorine from being absorbed into your hair, then, put on a tightly fitting swimming cap.

Rinse your hair with fresh water immediately after swimming, and don't allow chlorine to dry on your hair. Shampoo the hair with hair cleansing, clarifying shampoo, follow-up with a reconditioning treatment. Redken’s Color Extend “Total Recharge” neutralizes chlorine and helps protect the hair for swimming. Extreme “Deep Fuel” is a very good treatment for this as well. You may want to consider Redken’s Shades EQ or any other no ammonia, low pH acid color, to refresh and enhance your hair color.

Sun bathers. When lying out apply a good conditioner with sunscreens in it. The heat from the sun will help the action of the conditioner, and the sunscreens will block out the UV rays which cause hair damage. Color and TR treated hair has special needs and good care is good sense for any hair type. Try to use hats, scarves or products with sunscreens to help protect against color fade and the drying effects of the sun.
